Water, a necessity of life, is the commodity we can’t live without, one that over a billion people lack. They lack an adequate source and purity. Hundreds of children in Guatemala die each year from water borne disease.
In the department of Izabal in eastern Guatemala, there are 4000 families, about 25,000 people who live daily with the lack of adequate potable water. It is our intension to provide simple, potable water systems that can provide 20 gallons of clean water per day. (see water filter information page)
BENEFITS OF POTABLE WATER
This project will not only help prevent water borne disease, but will save the women many hours of labor carrying water. The prevention of disease will save lives and the cost of medical treatment. It will also provide productive time for the creation of handicrafts that can be sold and thus provide income for families that earn on the average of only $500.00 per year. It will relieve the need to keep children at home to help with family chores such as carrying water so that they can attend school and themselves become generators of income for the families.
This project is being conducted in conjunction with the Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund, an NGO founded in Tequesta, Florida as the fund raising arm for Ak’ Tenamit in Izabal Guatemala. ( see page 5.) The Health Department at Ak’ Tenamit will provide for the distribution and supervision of the use of the water filter device. The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund will collect the funds for the purchase of the water filter systems and distribute them to Ak’ Tenamit for the purchase and distribution.
HOW YOU OR YOUR CLUB CAN HELP
The total required to supply each family with a water filter system is $200,000.00.
During this initial program, our goal is to reach $14,000.00. This amount is enough for 280 Water filters at $50.00 each including transportation. With this beginning we will be able to provide 2 water filters for each village in the project area. Projects are being proposed in several other Rotary Districts around the county that over the next few years we will be able to provide systems to each family in need.
Your club can help by participating at a level consistent with your club’s budget. We hope that each club in District 7090 will be able to provide a minimum of $200.00 and more if able. Some individuals have expressed a desire to help personally and these contributions will be much appreciated.
Contributions for the Water filter systems should be to: Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund, Inc. and note on the check “7090 Water Filter Project”.

Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund Inc.
Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund will acknowledge receipts for contributions. Reporting of funds received and purchases made will be sent to LeRoy Rotary and District 7090 as required.
Financial oversight will be through the Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund who’s Board of Directors consists of 11 Rotarians out of 16 members. Also in Guatemala the Puerto Barrios Rotary Club and member Steve Dudenhoefer will also provide oversight. Rotarian, Steve Dudenhoefer, is the Ak’ Tenamit founder and Technical Advisor.
